Techniques
Joni selects one of three different clay types depending on the nature of the piece. For example, a bathroom sink requires a heavy grog or sandy clay for strength. Modeling employs a variety of hand-building processes, but the aim is always to allow the clay freedom of movement. Expressing her vivid imagination she includes found objects and materials to give form and texture; this process promotes individuality and the unconventional.
Once modeling is complete, the piece is left to air dry for up to two weeks. This is followed by bisque firing to 1,940 degrees F (cone 04) for approximately 24 hours. Glazes can now be applied by brush, employing a novel layering technique. Joni has spent many years experimenting with glaze recipes to create a vibrant palate. The glazes that she has developed in house are at once unique, frost proof, will not deteriorate in the oven, microwave or dishwasher, and are food safe.
Finally the piece is set for glaze firing. This time the kiln is heated to 2,187 degrees F (cone 06) in a carefully controlled firing cycle that takes approximately 36 hours.
